5th July 2018: Rupa – Aaj Shanibar
Artist: Rupa Title: Aaj Shanibar Language: Bengali A few days late…but a super disco track from 1982! I don’t think I have chosen a Bengali track before 🙂
Artist: Monitor Title: Maailm, ärka Language: Estonian A break from World Cup stuff – I thought I would throw in this cool 1985 track from Estonia. Apart from not having enough cow bell, I love this! The title translates as ‘Wake up, the world!’. We really need that to happen soon!
Artist: Tedje en de Flikkers Title: Nieuwjaar ’77 Language: Dutch Confusingly, this song is from 1979. This Dutch band only made one album, and that breaks my heart because they are awesome! Sometimes though, one killer album is enough. Today, I am in the Netherlands!
Artist: Les Chabroll’s (1965) Title: N’y Touche Pas Language: French On my holidays, so this track might give you a clue to where I am…this band are from Antwerp! Looking forward to sharing some more travel-related tunes over the next few days! Antwerp – fashion, chocolate, beer, diamonds and frites…what’s not to love?
Artist: Hibari Misora with The Blue Comets Title: Makkana Taiyo (Red Sun) Language: Japanese To celebrate Japan getting out of their World Cup group, we have a great tune from 1967 (I really like The Blue Comets!). Wishing them luck – it is nice to see a non-European team doing well.
Artist: Guarajeo Title: Matizando la salsa Language: Spanish (Costa Rica) I have some excellent music from Costa Rica for you all today, with the Vargas brothers (among others in this group) putting on the style! Costa Rica are not going to get out of their group in the World Cup. That’s a fact. But hey, at least they have music...
Artist: Tatarar Title: Fimmta boðorðið Language: Icelandic The title of this song is ‘The Fifth Commandment’. I have been following the mighty Tweets of Reykjavík Grapevine, and the link is right there so you now have no excuse not to follow them! I think the Icelandic fifth commandment may be ‘Thou shalt smite the world’. Wishing the Icelandic football team...
